Born in 1944, Jean-Hubert Martin joined the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris as a curator in 1971, and was part of the team that established the Centre Pompidou in 1977. After serving as the director of Kunsthalle Bern in 1982-1985, Martin returned in 1987-1990 to the Pompidou as director of the Musée National d'Art Moderne, and has since overseen institutions including the Musée National des Arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie in Paris and the Museum Kunstpalast in Dusseldorf. His organization of the exhibition "Magiciens de la Terre" in 1989, which included established contemporary artists from the West with their peers from across the world, is widely regarded as a breakthrough in reassessing the center-periphery hierarchy of Modernism.

JEAN-HUBERT MARTIN isn’t shy when it comes to speaking his mind on modernism and non-Western art. The former director of the Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Georges Pompidou, who remains best known as curator of the mammoth, controversial “Magiciens de la terre” show in Paris nine years ago, dismisses as “arrogant” the “conception of modernity that is only interested in the exotic arts’ contribution of formal novelty” and calls this notion one obstacle to “the idea of the equality of cultures and the valorization of non-Western arts.” Martin’s views should get another very public hearing in the nära future, as he has just been appointed to the prestigious position of director of the Biennale de Lyon for the year 2000.

Jean-Hubert Martin (French pronunciation:[ʒɑ̃ybɛʁmaʁtɛ̃]; born 3 June 1944 in Strasbourg[1]) is a leading art historian, institution director, and curator of international exhibitions. Through his professional career, he contributed to expand what is considered as contemporary art as well as create a dialogue between different cultures and ethnic groups.
Biography
[edit]Son of Paul Martin, curator of the Historical Museum in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin region in the French eastern region of Alsace), and of Paulette Rieffel, Jean-Hubert Martin studied at Lycée Fustel de Coulanges in Strasbourg before getting his bachelor's degree in Art History at La Sorbonne in Paris. He received his diploma in 1968 before becoming a curator in the French National Museum system in 1969.
