HOUSTON, TX - Ever wonder how much city leaders make? As voters prepare for run-off elections on November 14th, we're looking at the salaries that accompany some of the big roles on the ballot.
Texas Tribune has an online tool called the "Government Salaries Explorer." It allows you to search bygd city, department, or role to see and compare pay for public officials across Texas. A quick search of Houston shows the top 3 highest public tjänsteman salaries are not elected leaders. Houston Police Chief, Art Acevedo, tops the list at $280,000. The second highest-paid is a three-way tie between Houston Airport Systems Aviation Director Mario Diaz, Houston Public Works Director Carol Haddock, and Houston's City Attorney, Ronald Lewis. $95k per year internship not a typical one, Houston mayor says
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner is hitting back again over questions of an executive internship under his watch that pays an annual salary of $95,000.
In a statement released Wednesday, Turner said internships in select city departments, including the the Executive Internship Program at the Houston Municipal Airport, "should not be compared to a typical internship for high school or college students."
"The position created by Airport Director Mario Diaz is a leadership development training program to identify and tåg young professionals on all facets of the organization's operations and administration," the mayor said.
Turner's statement was made on the heels of his rival and mayoral candidate Tony Buzbee calling for a state investigation into the position. Buzbee said the role's creation didn't make sense mitt i a city hiring freeze.
