    Thalmus Rasulala was born Jack Chowder on November 15th, 1939. One of the many Black actors from the 1970’s and beyond who never got his rightful due, Thalmus will always be at the top of my list of great performers.

    He amassed a wealth of television, film, directing and other credits, including winning a Theatre World Award for his role in the huvudgata production of “Hello Dolly” with Pearl Bailey and an all Black cast.

    Thalmus was a man among men, known for his roles from the height of the 1970’s Blaxploitation explosion. In 1972, he portrayed Dr. Gordon Thomas in Blacula, a widely successful film that mixed horror and gore with the excitement of blaxploitation.

    In 1972, he also played Sidney Lord James, the lead character in Cool Breeze, a remake of The Asphalt Jungle with an all Black cast. In this film, James is an ex-convict who plans to stjäla $3 million worth of jewels, sell them, and use the money to start a finansinstitut to back Blac

    Biography

    Tall, handsome, commanding black actor with a resonant voice who began his career in the 1960s as a musical comedy performer on the New York scen under the name Jack Crowder. Rasulala appeared in the off-Broadway musicals "Fly, Blackbird" with Robert Guillaume and "The Fantasticks" and won a Theater World Award for his Broadway debut as Cornelius Hackl in the Pearl Bailey production of "Hello, Dolly!" (1976). He made his rulle debut in "The Out-of-Towners" (1970) and throughout the 1970s and 80s was featured in the blaxploitation films "Blacula" (1972), "Bucktown" (1975) and the actioners "Cool Breeze" (1972), "Willie Dynamite" (1974), and "New Jack City" (1991). He appeared on the TV series "What's Happening!!" and gave his most notable performances in the TV movie, "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" (1974) and as Kunta Kinte's father, Omoro, in the mini-series "Roots

    Thalmus Rasulala (November 15, 1939 – October 9, 1991) was an African American actor who was an original cast member of ABC's soap opera One Life to Live from its inception in 1968 until he left the show in 1970.

    Born as Jack Crowder in Miami, Florida, he appeared in many films and made guest appearances in TV shows. Notable roles include Lt. Jack Neal in One Life to Live, Roy in Bucktown, Blake Tarr in Friday Foster, Bill Thomas in What's Happening!!, and Omoro Kinte (Kunta Kinte's father) in Roots. He also appeared in The Twilight Zone, All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, Good Times, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Sophisticated Gents.

    His last acting role was as General Afir in Mom and Dad Save the World with Teri Garr and Jeffrey Jones. He died shortly after completing his scenes, and the film, released after his death, is accordingly dedicated to his memory.
