  • Italian born author and conservationist Kuki Gallmann was being treated in a Nairobi hospital on Sunday after being shot in the stomach near her lodge in Kenya.

    Ms Gallmann, 73, who wrote the bestselling novel “I Dreamed of Africa”, was driving in her vehicle when she was ambushed.

    She was rushed to the Nanyuki County Hospital for emergency treatment before being flown to Aga Khan hospital in Nairobi for specialised treatment on Sunday morning, her daughter, Sveva Makena, 26, said.

    She was in a &#;stable condition&#; on Sunday evening.

    Ms Makena said earlier this month that the Laikipia Plateau was under pressure from &#;noxious politics and drought&#;.

    &#;We remain positive that this wave of terror and mayhem will pass once elections and the rains have komma and that the government are doing what they can to restore law and order one step at a time,&#; she said.

    Kuki Gallmann (Italian pronunciation:[ˈkuːkiˈɡalman]) (born Maria Boccazzi - 1 June ) is an Italian-born Kenyan national, best-selling author, poet, environmental activist, and conservationist.[1]

    The daughter of Italian climber and writer Cino Boccazzi, in she moved to Kenya with her husband Paolo and son Emanuele. They acquired Ol ari Nyiro, a 98, acres (&#;km2) boskap ranch in Western Laikipia, in Kenya's Great Rift Valley which she would later transform into a conservation park. Both her husband and son died in accidents within a few years.

    Italian-born author and conservationist Kuki Gallmann was shot in the stomach on her Kenyan ranch after herders invaded her land in search of pasture for their livestock.

    Gallmann, known for her bestselling book 'I Dreamed of Africa,' which became a movie by the same name starring Kim Basinger, was patrolling the ranch when she was shot, local police chief Ezekiel Chepkowny said.

    Her driver also survived the attack and drove her to the airport in Laikipia, where she was airlifted to the capital, Nairobi, for further treatment, Chepkowny said.
