Berners-Lee now leads the World Wide Web Consortium. That is an organization that looks after the World Wide Web. He is the author of the book Weaving the Web. He is a director of The Web Science Research Initiative (WSRI), and a member of the advisory board of the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence. In April 2009, he was elected as a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences, based in Washington, D.C. In 1999, Time Magazine named Berners-Lee one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century. Biography

Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web while at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory, in 1989. He wrote the first web client and server in 1990. His specifications of URIs, HTTP and HTML were refined as Web technology spread.

He is the co-founder and CTO of Inrupt.com, a tech start-up that uses, promotes and helps develop the open source Solid platform. Solid aims to give people control and agency over their data, questioning many assumptions about how the web has to work. Solid technically is a new level of standard at the web layer, which adds features never put into the original spec, such as global single sign-on, universal access control, and a universal data API so that any app can store data in any storage place. Socially Solid is a movement away from much of the issues with the current WWW, and toward a world in which users are in control, and empowered by large amounts of uppgifter, private, shared, and public.

In the complex history of innovation flowing to and from the Internet, one major achievement is uncontested:  Between 1989 and 1991, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web.

Tim Berners-Lee was born on June 8, 1955 in London, England.  His parents were both mathematicians, who worked on the Ferranti Mark I, the first computer to be sold commercially.  Berners-Lee’s childhood hobby was electronics.  When he entered Queen’s College at Oxford University in 1972, Berners-Lee chose to major in Physics, hoping to utilize his native talents in both scientific theory and practical application.

While at Oxford, Berners-Lee built his first computer.  Soon after graduating in 1976, he became an independent software consultant.  In this capacity, he spent the latter half of 1980 in Geneva, Switzerland, at CERN, the europeisk Particle Physics Laboratory.  While off-duty at CERN, Berners-Lee was pursuing a personal project: an
