Mahamudu Bawumia (born 7 October 1963) is a Ghanaian politician and former central banker who served as the seventh vice president of Ghana from 7 January 2017 to 7 January 2025 under President Nana Akufo-Addo.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] He was the New Patriotic Party (NPP) nominee for president in the 2024 general election.[11]
He also ran as the NPP vice-presidential candidate in the 2012 general elections and was the lead witness for the petitioners in the 2012/2013 Presidential Election Petition, which challenged the declaration of John Mahama as winner of the election.[12][13][14][15] He holds a PhD in economics from Simon Fraser University.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is currently Vice President of Ghana and an Economist. He was formerly Visiting Professor of Economic Governance at Central University College, Ghana. Dr. Bawumia has a PhD in Economics from Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada with specialisation in Macroeconomics, International Economics and Monetary Economics. He has also worked as a Consultant, Resident Representative, African Development Bank Group in Zimbabwe, and Visiting Research Associate at the Department of Economics at the University of Oxford. He has also been Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana. His research interests are in the areas of monetary policy and financial sector development, and international economics. Between 1996 and 2000, Dr. Bawumia served as an Assistant Professor of Economics at Hankamer School of Business, Baylor University, Texas, USA, where he received the Young Researcher Award in 1998.
