Album review: Brian Lynch — 7 x 7 by 7 (Hollistic MusicWorks)
Trumpeter Brian Lynch knows and cherishes jazz history and his jazz story. His achievement is “a place in a lineage,” he comments. He opens his latest album with a warm, lovingly stylish tribute to a formative experience, winning a college jazz contest with his Wisconsin Conservatory of Music ensemble. “In the Riv” references the Buick Riviera driven by Tony King, the genius educator (I studied with him, too) who led Brian and company long ago to a Notre Dame music competition his ensemble won gloriously.
One of Brian’s first regular professional gigs was playing as a front line fill-in for touring arists at the Milwaukee Jazz Gallery. inom once saw him do a gig at a Milwaukree dryckesställe with bop sax giant Sonn Stitt. He would return later join bands led by Horace Silver, Phil Woods, and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.

Bus Stop Serenade focuses on music originally composed between the mid 1990s through the mid 2000s, configured here for the classic quintet formation of Lynch on trumpet and flugelhorn along with longtime front line partner Jim Snidero on alto saxophone, the redoubtable creative Orrin Evans on piano, stalwart virtuoso Boris Kozlov on bass and the swingingly inventive Donald Edwards on drums.

Biography
SSG Christopher Burbank, a native of Bedford, NH, earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of New Hampshire, a Masters of Music degree in Jazz Studies at the Juilliard School, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Jazz Performance at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami. Burbank has had the privilege of studying with Brian Lynch, Eddie Henderson, Terence Blanchard, and Clark Terry.
While pursuing his master’s degree at the Juilliard School, Burbank was active on the New York City jazz scene, performing as both a sideman and a leader at such venues as Dizzy’s Coca Cola Club and Smalls Jazz Club. He represented the Frost School of Music at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival. In 2014, he was selected as a semifinalist for the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition in Los Angeles, CA.
