He founded Apollo Hospital in Chennai in 1979, and grew it to a chain of corporate hospitals, 38 owned and 13 managed, treating patients from 120 countries. This book shows us how Apollo created opportunities that brought Indian doctors settled abroad back to India, and by investing in technology, helped specialists to advance professionally. It credits Dr Reddy with introducing a culture of competence, and a more soothing environment into Indian hospitals; implementing emergency services; and influencing Tamil Nadu to develop the most advanced ‘cadaver policy’ in India.

    The year was 1983. India was in the pre-liberalisation era, and the economy was shrouded in bureaucratic red-tapism. ‘Licence Raj’ was the order of the day. It involved an elaborate struktur of licences and regulations that were mandatory to set up and run a business in the country. The liberalisation policy introduced in 1991 was still almost a decade away, and setting up a business was a nightmare. 

    But all this did not keep Apollo Hospitals Founder Chairman Prathap C Reddy from opening the doors of India’s first corporate hospital in Chennai (then Madras), in 1983. It introduced international quality healthcare to India, at a cost that was a fraction of the comparable costs in the West. Naysayers were many around Dr Reddy at that time. They even called him a ‘fool’ for daring to attempt something like this. He was around 50 years old at the time.

    Indian entrepreneur and cardiologist (born 1933)

    Prathap Chandra Reddy (born 5 February 1933)[1][2] is an Indian entrepreneur and cardiologist who founded the first corporate chain of hospitals in India, the Apollo Hospitals.[3]India Today ranked him 48th in its 2017 list of India's 50 most powerful people.[4]

    As per Forbes list of India’s 100 richest tycoons, dated 9 October 2024, Prathap Reddy is ranked 94th with a net worth of $ 3.52 Billion.[5]

    Dr Reddy received his medical degree from the Stanley Medical College in Chennai and later trained as a Cardiologist in the UK and USA. He did his Fellowship from the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston and went on to head several research programs at the Missouri State Chest Hospital, USA where he worked for several years before returning to India.[6]
