    Frank Wedekind was born in Hanover, Germany, but grew up in Switzerland, in a castle purchased by his father. Wedekind's father was a doctor, and his mother was an actress in the German Theatre in San Francisco prior to her marriage. Wedekind was the second eldest of six children. He had a secondary school education, and worked as a freelance journalist, in advertising, and as the private secretary of an art dealer before he began to make his living through the theatrical arts.

    With the art dealer, Wedekind traveled through France and England. Upon his return in , Wedekind began to write and seek work as an actor, primarily in Munich. Wedekind took up writing at a time when Germany was experiencing a new flowering in the dramatic arts, but Wedekind did not belong to any one particular school.     Wedekind also kept a diary that his younger daughter only fairly recently released for publication. The title Diary of an Erotic Life is not inappropriate; young Frank, especially during his Parisian years, was a great womanizer. As a very ung man in his father's Swiss castle, then as a rebellious son and self-made man in Berlin, Munich, Paris and London, he kept a diary of his preponderantly erotic vie dem boheme. He also had unusual jobs: as a writer of advertising jingles for Maggi soup, and as a publicist for a circus. And he wrote, though without getting anything produced for years. Mostly, he would rise at noon, see people in the afternoon, have dinner with friends, go to a theater or cabaret or musikdrama house, then drink in good company till early morning. Some days, though, he just worked.

    Benjamin Franklin Wedekind (July 24, &#; March 9, ) was a German playwright. His work, which often criticizes bourgeois attitudes (particularly towards sex), is considered to anticipate expressionism and was influential in the development of epic theatre.[1]

    In the English-speaking world, before Wedekind was best known for the "Lulu" cycle, a two-play series—Erdgeist (Earth Spirit, ) and Die Büchse der Pandora (Pandora's Box, )—centered on a young dancer/adventuress of mysterious origin. In his earlier play Frühlings Erwachen (Spring Awakening, ) became well known because of a Broadway musical adaptation.
