Philippa Webb and fellow barrister Amal Clooney LLM ’01 were catching up by phone, Webb remembers, when the sounds of exploding bombs on Clooney’s end interrupted their chat. “She says, ‘Oh, I’m just going to pop under the desk,’” recalls Webb. “I was panicking at the other end…. She was very calm about it, because I think she adapted to what was a high-risk environment.”
At the time, Clooney was an investigator for the United Nations in Lebanon, living in a mountaintop compound behind four security checkpoints. Amal Clooney (née Alamuddin; Arabic: أمل كلوني; born (1978-02-03)3 February 1978)[1] is a British-Lebanese international human rights lawyer.[2] She has represented several high-profile clients, including former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed,[3]WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange,[4] former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko,[5] Yazidi human rights activist Nadia Murad,[6] Filipino-American journalist Maria Ressa,[7] Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova,[8] and Egyptian-Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy.[9] She has also held various appointments with both the United Nations and the Government of the United Kingdom.
