Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent (1 August 1936 – 1 June 2008),[1] better known as Yves Saint Laurent (, , , French:[ivsɛ̃lɔʁɑ̃]ⓘ) or YSL, was a French fashion designer who, in 1962, founded his eponymous mode label. He is regarded as being among the foremost mode designers of the twentieth century.[2]
Saint Laurent helped women find confidence by looking both comfortable and elegant at the same time. He is credited with having introduced the "Le Smoking" tuxedo suit for women, and he was known for his use of non-European cultural references and diverse models.[3] In 1985, historian Caroline Milbank called Saint Laurent "the most consistently celebrated and influential designer of the past twenty-five years", adding that he "can be credited with both spurring the couture's rise from its 1960s ashes and with finally rendering ready-to-wear reputable".[ • Yves Mathieu-Saint-Laurent was born at the Jarsaillon Clinic in Oran, Algeria on August 1, 1936. Growing up among the society people of Oran, he was a shy young boy with a loving family. His drawing talents emerged early on, while he was still a teenager.
