Warren Barge remembers the call.
He and golf legend Calvin Peete had been friends for 40 years, often flying around the country to play in golf tournaments or flying around town in one of Barge’s Rolls Royces.
Peete was estranged from his wife and living with a son in Pompano Beach, Fla.
It was a long way from the PGA Tour, which he blazed through in the 1980s as the most successful Black golfer on the tour before Tiger Woods. Cancer had ravaged his once athletic body.
He needed Barge.
“He wasn’t doing well and he wanted to get out of Florida,” said Barge, who picked Peete up last November.

He set him up in the home of a friend, Pamela Harris, who was more direct in her assessment: “Warren found him in a house with no furniture, sleeping on a mattress on the floor and eating peanut butter out of a jar.”

Calvin Peete (July 18, 1943 – April 29, 2015) was an American professional golfer. He was the most successful African-American to have played on the PGA Tour, with 12 wins, prior to the emergence of Tiger Woods. Peete won the 1985 Tournament Players Championship and finished the season top-5 on the PGA Tour money list three times; 1982, 1983 and 1985. He was ranked in the top 10 players on the McCormack's World Golf Rankings in 1984.
Early life

Hobson recounts how, when Peete joined the lily-white PGA tour in 1976, he stood out from the competition in more ways than one. Peete wasn't raised in country clubs and didn't learn the game at prestigious golf universities. He had a permanently bent left elbow and practiced endless hours in a public park to develop one of the most accurate swings in the history of golf. He endured years of futility and despair, but, eventually, he emerged as the best player on the Tour from 1982–86.
