The claim that “nations are judged by their economic power” is not always true. The assertion glorifies GDP as an indicator of a nation’s total output, but economists have long known that the GDP figures have a number of weaknesses in measuring the total output of a country and the wellbeing of its citizens. Dr Yibeltal Assefa Alemu (MD, MSc, PhD): is an Associate Professor of Global Health Systems at the School of Public Health. His research program focuses on Global Health, Health Systems, and Primary Health Care towards Universal Health Coverage and Global Health Security.
